Warding Caster

Requires: contingent_caster

You can bind a spell onto a specific object or location, setting a condition upon which the spell will be cast. Unlike with a contingent spell, a ward is not rolled when created, and it takes one hour (as a Rest activity) to create the ward. In addition, a ward can trigger multiple times.

When you create a ward, you choose a spell, name a condition (which may include identifying the target), and choose a Good Thing that does not affect you personally from a list of those offered by the spell or from your class list. The spell must be one that requires a spellcasting roll, and not one that requires its target to Avoid Danger. You must also record your spellcasting bonus, including any conditional bonuses such as those granted by Focus implements if you are wielding one.

Each time that the condition becomes true, the Director will roll+your spellcasting bonus on your behalf, using the spellcasting bonus recorded when the ward was created. The only Good Thing that they may select is the one you chose when the ward was created; the only Bad Thing that they may select is the following:

  • The ward is damaged, and can no longer trigger.

As an example, Kethra spends an hour placing a ward on her backpack. She states as her condition: “If a person other than myself opens this pack, they are the target of a Static Discharge spell.” She selects “additional damage” as her Good Thing (given by the spell itself), and records her spellcasting bonus of +6.

A hobgoblin rogue attempts to open her pack, and the Director immediately rolls+6 to Cast the Spell. They get a total of 17, which is a partial success. The hobgoblin takes 1d8 Electricity damage, and the ward is no longer active.
