Soul Anchor

Power: 5
Casting Time: 8 hours
Range: Self
Target: Self
Duration: Permanent
Provokes: Disrupt Ritual

This spell renders the caster nearly immortal. The caster prepares a small object, typically a gemstone, to receive their soul. The object is magically protected; regardless of what it originally was, it now has a Smash TN equal to the caster's Spellcasting Skill bonus plus fifteen. (By the earliest time the caster can even perform this ritual, this will likely render the object as hard as diamond.)

The caster then excises their soul and binds it in the object. So long as the object is intact, the caster can never die! No matter how much damage the caster takes, they can never fail a Survival Saving Throw.

Of course, this spell does have its limits and down sides. The first is that the spell slows, but does not stop, ageing, and the caster will continue to age, at about half the normal rate for their ancestry, until they reach an apparent age of 100 (in Human years). Second, with their soul no longer in their body, they do not heal as quickly as normal. Regardless of their Body, the caster cannot regain more than one recovery per day, and cannot be the target of any healing magics. Third, and most importantly, if the Soul Anchor is ever destroyed, the caster immediately dies.

The caster cannot have more than one Soul Anchor at a time, nor can they create a replacement in any way. Further, the caster's soul is removed from their body, and placed in a temporary anchor, as this spell is begun. For that reason, if this Ritual is Disrupted, the caster immediately dies. Clearly, a caster will wait as long as possible before performing this ritual, to ensure that their Soul Anchor is as indestructible as possible, and then ensure that they are as protected as possible while performing this ritual, and then finally, ensure that their Soul Anchor is heavily defended, wherever they end up hiding it.
