Characters

Your character is the role you will play in your adventures. Every character has different strengths and weaknesses, distinct personality traits, a unique back-story, and quirks. You have considerable freedom to fashion your character, and you should do your best to make them as memorable as possible.

Character Concept

This is a remarkably important step, and should not be skipped! It will influence every decision you make concerning your character.

Determine where your character comes from. You might need to work with the Director on this, but it should be easy enough if you want your character to be a simple farmer, a scholar, a criminal, or a soldier, prior to becoming a hero.

Determine the sort of skills you want your character to have. They might be deadly with a blade or a bow, or they might be a skilled expert in a specific field. They might simply be uncommonly tough, or they might have magical or psychic powers.

And get a picture of your character in your mind, both their physical appearance and their mannerisms. This will help your character feel more alive during the character creation process.

Creating Your Character

Creating your character is a five-step process.

  1. Select your ancestry.
  2. Choose your back-story, and gain a feature based on that back-story.
  3. Choose your class, and select a class feature from that class.
  4. Determine your character's attributes and statistics.
  5. Receive an Adventurer's Kit, and spend 100 silver pennies to select your equipment.

Attributes and Statistics

While it may seem daunting at first, understanding attributes and statistics is crucial for shaping your character's gameplay experience. In the following sections, we'll break down the different types of stats, explain how they relate to your character concept, and guide you through the process of assigning values to each.

Attributes

Each character has six different attributes, each representing a strength or weakness in the character's natural talents. These six attributes are Agility, Body, Charisma, Dexterity, Education and Foresight. Each attribute contributes to various aspects of your character's abilities.

As you begin building your character, you will start with a score of zero in each of these attributes. But that's the average—it means that the character is neither above nor below average. As you choose your Ancestry, Back-Story and Class, you will be given values to distribute among your attributes, allowing you to customize and prioritize your character's strengths.

Defences

Your attributes also define your character's defences. Enemy attacks will be rolled against a target number determined by adding ten to the targeted attribute. For example, if an enemy targets your Agility, your Agility defence would be 10 + your Agility attribute score.

Your Class, as well as certain features, can boost your defences. One common way to improve defences is through training. Each Class will train two of your defences, allowing you to add your Level to the corresponding defences. Be sure to mark trained defences on your character sheet.

Statistics

In addition to attributes, your character will have several statistics that are generated based on other choices you make during character creation. These statistics include Level, stamina, recoveries, and speed.

Level represents your character's overall growth and experience, while stamina dictates how much damage they can sustain before falling unconscious. Recoveries determine how quickly your character can regain their Stamina, and speed influences their movement and reaction times.

As a reference point, an average completed character will have 45 stamina, five recoveries and a speed of six.

Alex: I'm excited to create my first character! What kind of information do I need to get started?

Director: Well, the first thing you'll want to do is come up with your character concept. This is a Dark Ages game, so no gunslingers or anything like that, but it's also fantasy. Think Lord of the Rings, or Game of Thrones.

Alex: Okay, that makes sense! Since it's a dark fantasy world, I'm torn between two character ideas: a stoic defender, or a cunning manipulator. Which one do you think would be a better fit?

Director: Well, your party already has a Savant and a Druid, so the defender-type would probably be a better fit.

Alex: Great! I think being a stoic defender sounds like a good way to complement the party. Leaning into the “seen too much war” side of things appeals to me. Maybe a grizzled veteran who fights with a one-handed weapon and a large shield. What kind of class options would be good for a heavily armored defender in Unbound Tales?

Director: Well, either the Warrior or the Guardian would fit. The Warrior prefers accuracy, whereas the Guardian is built to simply absorb punishment. But we'll get back to classes in a minute. We've got a couple of other things to choose first.
