Travel Overland

Time Required: 1 hour
Skill: None (but special cases exist)

The party moves a distance equal to the speed of their slowest member, expressed in kilometers. At its most basic, that's all there is to this action. However, many options apply.

If the party is moving strictly along decent roads, they may increase the speed by one. On the other hand, if they are moving through dense woods, desert, jungle or mountainous terrain, their speed is halved. If forced to move through wetlands, they may cover half a kilometer per hour, regardless of their speed.

Travel Activities

A party that is moving overland is not doing anything more than moving, and keeping half an eye on their surroundings. However, other options exist for activities during overland travel.

Forage

A character who is trained in either Nature or Survival may hunt or forage while on the march. If you choose to do so, your speed is halved. So long as you are not moving through a barren area, such as desert or tundra, you may find foodstuffs equal to 1 copper penny towards meals per training rank you have in both Nature and Survival. Treat this as rations, not as meals in a community.

Hustling

The party has ways to increase their speed. Any individual in the party may choose to expend a recovery in order to double their speed over the course of the hour. Note that this won't help in wetlands!

A character who chooses to Hustle can still choose another overland activity.

So long as you are following roads or tracks, you don't need to worry about getting lost. However, once you venture out into the wilderness, navigation becomes more important. After each hour of travel, a character who is Navigating may make a Survival check against a TN of 12.

  • Success: You are on course.
  • Failure: You are off course by half an hour. The next time you Travel Overland, you cover only half the distance.

Navigating doesn't cost you any speed. But a failure to navigate could potentially slow your progress to a crawl.

If multiple people choose to navigate, then any success is considered a success for the activity, and the activity is a failure only if every person rolled a failure. If no person chose to navigate, the activity is automatically considered a failure.

Scout

If any party member wishes to scout for the party, they may halve their speed, and the party cannot be Surprised while moving.

Track

A party member who is Tracking a Creature is considered to be Travelling Overland at half their speed, and cannot use a recovery to boost their speed.

As Kioni tracks Sebastian, her speed is halved, leaving her with a speed of three. However, the slowest member of the party is Aria, who as a Gnome has a speed of three. To be on the safe side, Sir Roland expends a recovery to double his speed, but then elects to scout for the party, halving his speed again. This will ensure that if Sebastian doubles back and tries to ambush the party, they will not be Surprised.
