Climb a Surface
Time Required: Simple Action
Skill: Athletics
You can attempt to climb a surface. You must have both hands free in order to do so. The TN of your Athletics check depends on the angle of the surface and the quality of their grip. The table below gives these values.
Angle | TN | Surface | TN |
---|---|---|---|
45° | 3 | Large, obvious handholds | -3 |
60° | 6 | Small or faint handholds | 0 |
75° | 9 | Very smooth | Slight |
90° | 12 | Wet surface | Slight |
Overhang | 18 | Slick surface | Slight |
Ceiling | 21 | Surface is unstable or loose | Slight |
- Success: You move half your Speed, in meters, up the surface. This movement is in addition to, and does not count towards, your free movement for the turn. If this is sufficient to top the surface, you end your movement standing at the top of the surface.
- Failure: You make no upwards movement.
Taking this action provokes a Counterattack. While climbing, you grant favour to anybody who attacks you. If you end your turn and have not completed a climb, you are clinging to the surface until the start of your next turn, when you can attempt another climb action.
If you are struck while climbing, you must immediately make an Athletics check against the surface's TN. On a failure, you fall.
Equipment
If any person in the party has a climber's kit, every member of the party gains favour on attempts to Climb a Surface.
Kioni decides to climb a tree to get a better vantage point. The Director tells her that from the ground to the first main branch is five meters. The tree is vertical (TN 12). Kioni starts climbing, and rolls her Athletics, scoring a 19. She climbs up three meters, due to her speed of 6. She then spends a second simple action to continue climbing. She rolls an 11, just a bit too low, and is stuck for the moment. The next turn, she can probably finish her climb.
