Ranger

“Stay sharp and keep your eyes on the horizon; danger lurks in every shadow of this wilderness.”

The frontier lawman; the wilderness scout; the grizzled old hunter; all may well be Rangers. This is a class dedicated to finding their prey and quickly taking it down. They move silently, strike swiftly and fade once again into the background. They are equally at home navigating dense forests, tracking elusive prey, or serving as a vigilant protector of the wild.

Rangers are heavily tied to the wilderness, rather than the cities. Their skills and training are representative of the rural or wild lifestyles. They are typically uneasy in an urban setting, and many find their manners to be rude and uncouth.

One area in which Rangers are not so effective is magic. While a few Rangers have been known to join the Druidic order, very few bother to learn their magics. However, their easy access to plants and animals allows them to dabble in alchemy, and many become quite proficient potioneers.

Attributes

When you select Ranger as your class, take a +1 bonus to your Dexterity score. Then choose one of Agility, Body or Foresight, and take a +1 bonus to that attribute as well.

Stamina

When you select this class, increase your maximum stamina by twenty-five, plus five times your Body score. Your recoveries are equal to four plus your Body score.

Training

You receive one training rank in each of Blades, Bows, Nature, Stealth, Survival and Unbalanced Weapons. Choose three skills, plus a number equal to your Education score, from the following list: Acrobatics, Athletics, Blunt Weapons, Crafting, Insight, Intimidation, Investigation, Medicine, Perception, Thrown Weapons, Unarmed Combat. Each of these skills also receives one training rank.

Defences

You are trained in Agility and Foresight defences. Add your level to the total of these defences.

Basic Attacks

The Ranger is a well-rounded combatant, trained in both melee and ranged combat.

Melee: Skill vs. Agility.

Ranged: Skill vs. Agility.

Hunter's Mark

Time Required: 1 second

The Ranger tends to choose a single target and attempt to destroy it as quickly as possible. As a one-second action, you may Mark a creature that you can see, or that you are currently tracking. You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls against your Marked prey, as well as favour on attempts to spot or track it. You may only have one creature Marked at a time; if you Mark another, any other Mark you may have ends. A Mark also ends if the creature you have Marked dies.

When initiative is rolled, you may immediately Mark a foe that you can see as a free action.

Focus

At the start of any turn in which you have a foe Marked, you gain one Focus, to a maximum equal to your level. If you begin combat with a foe Marked (either because you were tracking it, or because you Marked them as a free action when initiative was rolled), you begin that combat with Focus equal to your current Victories.

Combat Styles

While all Rangers learn to use the bow with great precision, some choose to also study the use of melee weapons. Those who do so tend to become blindingly quick with these weapons, compensating for their lack of sheer power or vicious aim with repeated attacks. Still others learn the ways of the wild, and may even become members of the Druidic Order of the Wild Hunt.

However, the following Combat Styles do not affect your character development in many ways—only their starting position.

Archery Specialist

You have learned to master the powerful longbow and war bow, rather than the shorter hunting bow that most Rangers prefer. You do not suffer the -1 penalty inherent to an Advanced weapon when using a longbow. When using a bow, you may add your level to its damage, in addition to your Dexterity, and may disregard the first -1 range penalty.

Dual Weapon Specialist

Using a weapon in either hand is second nature to you, and you are quick to deploy them when they are needed. When Initiative is rolled, you may Ready a weapon in each hand as a free action.

Order of the Wild Hunt

Rather than focus on a specific combat style, you chose to embrace the spiritual aspects of your environment. You gain one point of Druidic Prestige, and learn the Druidic secret language.

Takedown Expert

Many Rangers act as law enforcement out on the fringes of society. Because of this, they've learned techniques for taking down their targets alive. When you use a weapon with the Non-Lethal property, you inflict +1 damage per die of damage rolled. Your attempts to Grab or Trip a target cannot provoke Counterattacks.
