Backgrounds

Since The Nexus Framework does not have classes, it instead relies on backgrounds to provide initial guidance during character creation. You will need to create backgrounds specific to your story. There is a small stable of backgrounds given below, universal enough to import into any setting, but varied enough to demonstrate clearly how the system works.

Each background is constructed with twenty Build Points. This system is for use by the game designer only. Players, or even Game Masters, should not use this system.

Each of the following options lists its cost in Build Points.

Any background must spend at least six Build Points on skills.

• 2 Points: Choose a specific skill. A character that selects this background receives a +2 training bonus in that skill.
• 3 Points: Choose a specific skill. A character that selects this background receives a +3 training bonus in that skill.
• 3 Points: A character that selects this background may choose any skill they do not currently have trained, and receives a +2 training bonus in that skill.

• 4 Points: Choose a specific trait. A character that selects this background receives that trait. If the trait comes from a Specialist trait pool, the character also receives access to that pool for later General trait choices.
• 3 Points: Choose a specific trait from a pool to which the background already has access. A character that selects this background receives that trait.
• 3 Points: Choose a specific trait from a pool to which the background does not have access. A character that selects this background receives that trait, but not access to that trait's pools.
• 3 Points: Choose a specific Skill trait. A character that selects this background receives that trait.

• 1 Point: The character who selects this background increases their maximum stamina by six.
• 1 Point: The character who selects this background receives 25¤ in currency.
