====== Creature Size ====== A creature's overall size is indicated by a value called Scale. Scale is relative to Human-sized, and it directly modifies several values. * Scale is added to Athletics. Negative Scale---for smaller creatures---therefore reduces Athletics. * Scale is subtracted from Reflex defence, including its passive value. Negative Scale therefore increases Reflex defence. * Scale is subtracted //twice// from Stealth. * Often (but not always), scale is added to each die of weapon or unarmed damage a creature rolls. Assume that it is, unless otherwise specified. Each creature takes up a different amount of space. The table below shows how much space a creature of a particular Scale controls in combat. Objects sometimes use the same size categories. ^ Scale ^ Space ^ Space ^ Reach ^ ^ ::: ^ (Upright) ^ (Long) ^ ::: ^ | -4 or smaller | ¼ square | ¼ square | Close | | -3 | ⅓ square | ⅓ square | 0 | | -2 | ½ square | ½ square | 1 | | -1 | 1 square | 1 square | 1 | | 0 | 1 square | 1×2 squares | 1 | | +1 | 1 square | 1×3 squares | 1 | | +2 | 2×2 squares | 2×6 squares | 2 | | +3 | 3×3 squares | 2×8 squares | 2 | | +4 | 4×4 squares | 3×8 squares | 3 | | +5 | 4×4 squares | 3×10 squares | 3 | | +6 | 5×5 squares | 4×10 squares | 4 | | +7 | 5×5 squares | 4×12 squares | 4 | Remember that each square is one meter across. This isn't always the space the creature occupies, but also typically includes the space that they control with physical attacks. Creatures that take up fractional spaces---those of Small size or smaller---can stack two creatures (if Scale -2), three creatures (if Scale -3) or up to four creatures (if Scale -4 or smaller) in a single square. Note that Large or larger creatures can typically attack foes at greater [[legacy:rules:Reach]]. ===== Sharing Squares ===== A creature may enter another creature's square if there are three levels of Scale difference between them, even if their combined sizes would exceed that square. For example, a Scale -3 creature could enter a Scale 0 creature's square, or a Scale -1 creature could enter one of a Scale +2 creature's squares. Of course, if the combined sizes of the creatures does not exceed one square---such as two Scale -2 or smaller creatures in one square---then more creatures can occupy the same space.
